Offbeat is a collection of sixteen audience-tested routines and nine essays drawn from Nick Diffatte’s working repertoire as a professional comedy magician. Rather than presenting a large assortment of undeveloped ideas, the book focuses on practical pieces that Diffatte has refined through repeated performances for real audiences. Each routine includes the necessary handling, preparation, scripting, comedy lines, and performance insights. 

The material ranges from large stand-up pieces with balloon animals, rope, handcuffs, crayons, and other props to intimate effects involving contact lenses, chewing gum, matches, money, tea bags, party blowers, and office supplies. Among the sixteen routines are Play Money, School of Hard Knots, Balloon Mammal, The Key to Freedom, Schtick of Gum, Nest of Office Supplies, Full Contact, 15 Crayons to Pocket, MisMatch, and Dye Another Day.
