SYNOPSIS:
The Phoenix: Issues 1–300 is the complete run of the influential biweekly magic periodical published from January 1942 through February 1954. Walter B. Gibson helped establish and initially edit the magazine with Bruce Elliott, who became its principal editor during the run. Conceived as a successor in spirit to Theodore Annemann’s The Jinx, each compact four-page issue typically contained three to five practical tricks, along with Elliott’s commentary, reviews, news, anecdotes, debates, and observations about the magic world.
Across approximately 1,200 continuously numbered pages, the collection preserves more than 1,500 routines, techniques, variations, columns, and articles from many prominent magicians of the era. Contributors include Dai Vernon, Ed Marlo, Nate Leipzig, Paul Curry, Al Baker, Jean Hugard, Ross Bertram, U. F. Grant, Roy Benson, Jay Marshall, Alex Elmsley, Frank Garcia, and numerous others. Unlike many commercial magazines, The Phoenix accepted no advertising, allowing nearly every page to be devoted to magic and editorial content.
The material ranges from card and coin magic to mentalism, close-up tricks, bar and impromptu effects, parlor routines, stage material, apparatus ideas, presentations, and magical curiosities. Because the magazine appeared over twelve years, it also provides a valuable record of how working magicians exchanged ideas during and immediately after the Second World War.
