SYNOPSIS:
Temporarily Out of Order is Patrick G. Redford’s foundational study of memorized-deck magic and the first volume in his Out of Order series. The book introduces the Redford Stack, a memorized order designed not merely to remain fixed, but to transform efficiently into other useful arrangements during performance. These include Si Stebbins, parallel and mirror or stay-stack configurations, alternating red-and-black order, poker and blackjack setups, and additional systems.
Redford explains ways to reach the stack from both new-deck order and an apparently shuffled pack, as well as routines that secretly arrange a borrowed deck while magic is already taking place. The repertoire includes poker and blackjack demonstrations, spelling tricks, coincidences, Faro-based material, false shuffles, false cuts, deck switches, and the multi-phase title routine. Many effects can be performed without memorizing the Redford Stack, while others can be adapted to Mnemonica, Aronson, or another memorized order.
The book’s larger contribution is its treatment of a stack as a flexible system rather than something that must be guarded throughout a performance. The magician can move into other arrangements, exploit their built-in possibilities, and later return to the original Redford order.
